Best Time of the Day for your Rome Photo Shoot

No such thing, I am afraid. Which is a good thing really, because the best time for your Rome photo session is when it best suits you, your taste and your style. There are however some considerations to be made for each time of day if you're booking a Vacation photoshoot with a Rome photographer.

Ultimately it's all down to your style, expectations, and vision, and it always helps to communicate those effectively to your ShootRome photographer to make sure they are met to the last detail. Consider using some sort of Inspiration Board when you discuss your ideas with the photographer during the initial contact.

Sunrise / Early Morning

Rome in the morning is just magical. The city wakes up at sunset and you have it all to yourselves, or something like that. Sunset and early morning are indeed great times to enjoy the city without the crowds, and a great opportunity to be photographed at iconic landmarks with virtually nobody in the proximity, so with plenty of privacy. Under certain circumstances, a touch of flash may be necessary to compensate for the lack of light, but just a kiss of extra light, only to complement the existing one. Please note that depending on the season and the time, there may be surcharge for the early hour start. Furthermore, this slot is highly requested, so make sure you enquire about availability for your date.

Daytime - Mornings and Afternoons

This is indeed the busiest time of the day. Privacy is an abstract concept during the day, after all Rome attracts millions of tourists each year. Lightwise, the morning and afternoon sun can be a little too harsh at times, but it can be tamed too. With the aid of our assistants and the use of reflectors, diffusers and a kiss of flash we can make beautiful portraits at all iconic locations in Rome. Expect to elbow your way through the crowds at times.

Sunset / Blue Hour

This is without doubt the most romantic time of the day, and also the most dramatic. You get to experience both the most flattering light and the blue hour ( after sunset ), all within the space of an hour. This also means it's second most popular slot of the day and goes very quickly. Note that given the nature of low light conditions an assistant may be required to operate lighting equipment.

Evening / Nighttime

Rome at night is absolutely stunning and after sunset is when Rome is more alive and fun. The compulsory use of flash, when used creatively, can be fun and make your images truly unique. On photo sessions by night one or two assistants may be required to guarantee that the flow of the session runs smoothly. Please note that the total net photography, as in the number of final images produced, is much lower on evening and nighttime photo shoots.

Attire

When it comes to attire for your Rome Photo Session, much depends upon the nature of the photo shoot, the season, your style. As long as it reflects your personality both individually and as a couple, there are no hard and fast rules. There are however a few considerations to be made regarding comfort and attire:

  • Respect the season and the weather of the day of the shoot. Bring an umbrella if rain is to be expected.
  • Dress in such a way that you feel confident and comfortable. Bring a pair of flat or comfortable shoes along too.
  • Be bold in choosing your colours and style, make a statement. However, make sure that you complement each other in your attire.
  • In cold weather, dress in layers, for maximum comfort.
  • Accessories, Accessories, Accessories.
  • Dark clothes are great for silhouette images.

On the Day of your Rome Vacation Shoot

The time has finally come and you're almost ready for your Vacation Photo Session in Rome. Here's your checklist before you meet your photographer.

  1. Check the Weather Forecast for the day - Dress accordingly.
  2. Your photographer will meet you 10 to 15 minutes before your Rome Photo Session. Make sure you arrive with plenty of time to spare (10 to 15 minutes), so you can relax.
  3. Leave everything of value back at the hotel or apartment, and only bring the strict necessary. You want to be able to move freely during the photo session and not have to worry about your belongings. Your photographer cannot carry your belongings with him.
  4. Pack a pair of flat shoes to move from one location to the next, for maximum comfort.
  5. Whenever you have an idea for an image, do not fail to tell your photographer.
  6. Bring the balance of photo session fee in cash.
